School of Biological Sciences

Our aims are excellence in fundamental biological research, innovation through multi-disciplinary initiatives, and development of translational links.

Biological Sciences is the largest of seven Schools in the College of Science and Engineering and one of the largest single academic units in the University Sciences and is structured in six discipline-based Research Institutes:

  • Institute of Cell Biology
  • Institute of Evolutionary Biology
  • Institute of Immunology and Infection Research
  • Institute of Molecular Plant Sciences
  • Institute for Stem Cell Research
  • Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology

As co-located groupings of researchers with related interests, the Institutes provide a forum for development of ideas, collaboration, and dissemination of results, and an environment for training, development and mentoring of research students and early-career researchers.

The School participates in many interdisciplinary Research Centres:

  • Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology
  • Centre for Immunity, Infection and Evolution
  • Edinburgh Infectious Diseases
  • MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine
  • Centre for Translational & Chemical Biology
  • BBSRC Centre for Systems Biology at Edinburgh

These Research Centres bring together researchers from different backgrounds in life sciences & medicine, physical sciences and social sciences to focus on biological questions requiring a range of approaches and techniques.
